Resident Recuitment and Program Values

The Franciscan Health Orthopaedic Surgery Residency Program is committed to a welcoming and supportive training environment that emphasizes equal opportunity, professionalism, rigorous training, and clear, consistently applied standards. We recognize that excellence in orthopaedic surgery is not limited by background or demographic factors.

Surgical residency is a rigorous period of professional development characterized by progressive responsibility, clinical problem-solving, and collaborative patient care. Our program has a track record of training technically capable surgeons from a variety of backgrounds and remains committed to recruiting, training, and supporting qualified residents dedicated to excellence in patient care and surgical education.

Visiting Student/Audition Rotations

We offer four-week audition rotations at our base hospital, Franciscan Health Olympia Fields, for applicants participating in the upcoming Match cycle.

Visiting students rotate between Dr. Payne and Dr. Mehl, with direct involvement in clinic, the operating room, and resident educational activities. Students are expected to participate actively in patient care appropriate to their level of training and to integrate fully with the resident team.

All visiting students participate in weekly Wednesday didactics, including structured educational lectures, fracture conference, and select industry-supported educational sessions (e.g., sawbones laboratories, system demonstrations, and instrumentation education).

Visiting students are also required to complete a brief 10–15-minute PowerPoint presentation during their rotation on a topic of their choice.
